Quick Answer

Hold the exterior handle while your partner matches the machine to the active coordinate, such as 2D. Holding the handle alone does not complete it, and the readings you see are not a code to type in order: the We Were Here Tomorrow Control room puzzle needs both players working at separate controls. After the setting is accepted, use the enabled handle to continue toward the Time Crystal section.

When you see the coordinate revealed by the held mechanism and the separate machine your partner adjusts, Control room, Control room 2D code, and Control room coordinate machine refer to the same puzzle.

How do you solve the Control room?

One of you holds the exterior handle, the other goes inside to the machine and sets it to the coordinate the mechanism is showing right now. This is the control-room step that leads into the Time Crystal chapter. Get one player on each control before you try a setting, so you can hold the mechanism and adjust the machine at the same time.

The handle and the machine have to work together. Pulling the handle gives your partner something to act on, but the machine still has to be adjusted. Whoever is holding the handle can't leave it to go look, so the other player has to find the machine. Once the adjustment works, the exterior mechanism starts turning and you can use the enabled handle to move on.

Why is this called the Control room 2D code or Control room coordinate machine?

These names describe the same cooperative coordinate-setting puzzle, with each name emphasizing a different part of it.

  • Control room: This names the destination where you are working through the mechanism.
  • Control room 2D code: This describes the short alphanumeric setting. One pair solved the puzzle with 2D, but you should take your setting from the active readout rather than treat that example as a fixed password.
  • Control room coordinate machine: This describes the separate machine the inside player adjusts while the outside player holds the mechanism.

This coordinate-setting step is separate from gaining office area control-room access. Here, you need to coordinate the exterior handle with the machine inside.

How does the Control room coordinate machine work?

Set the machine to the number-and-letter coordinate that shows while your partner holds the exterior mechanism.

Each coordinate is a number plus a letter, and it is one setting: 2D means the whole pair, not the number 2 or the letter D on its own. Read both characters out loud so the player at the machine gets the full instruction.

The readout changes between attempts. Players have seen 2D, 5C, 4A, and 3B here. Those are different readings you can get while working the mechanism, not a four-part password to enter one after another.

How do you enter the Control room 2D code?

Set the machine to 2D when your partner reports 2D as the active coordinate, and keep the exterior handle held while you adjust it.

Split between the two controls

Send one player inside to the machine. Keep the other outside at the handle. Decide who reads the coordinate and who adjusts the machine before you start.

Hold the exterior mechanism

The outside player holds the handle while the inside player stays at the machine. Holding it is only the setup, so don't stop here waiting for the puzzle to finish by itself.

Communicate the current coordinate

Read the active number and letter out loud. Have your partner repeat the pair back before adjusting, especially if you have already called out several different readings on earlier tries.

Match the machine

The inside player sets the machine to the coordinate just called out. In the 2D example that worked, that means setting the machine to 2D while the partner holds the exterior mechanism.

Look for the mechanism to turn

When the machine accepts the setting, the exterior mechanism starts turning. Use the enabled handle to move on toward the time-crystal section.

Why does holding the Control room handle not finish the puzzle?

The handle is only one side of it. Your partner also has to set the separate machine correctly.

If you're stuck pulling the handle, have the other player find and work the machine inside. If you're already split between the controls and nothing turns, check the machine against the coordinate showing now, not one somebody called out earlier.

Do not combine previous readings into a longer code or keep entering 2D after your partner reports a different coordinate. Communicate the active pair and match that pair at the machine.

Where do you go after the Control room?

Use the enabled handle to continue into the Time Crystal section. The next part takes you through a portal and toward finding the time crystal. Continue with the department head office projection route for the next puzzle.
